Why Your Therapy Website Isn’t Getting Traffic (And What You Can Do About It)

If you’ve put time into building your therapy website but aren’t seeing much traffic, it can feel discouraging. You might start to wonder: Is something wrong with my site?

Or you might start getting frustrated: Why aren’t people finding me?!?!?!?

When I’m working with new website clients, these are some really important questions that I try to preemptively answer. I KNOW it gets frustrating. You build a site and you want new customers and clients to start converting right way.

The reality is that this is a very common experience—especially in the early stages of a website, or when SEO hasn’t been a focus. But, the good news is that there are usually clear, fixable reasons behind it. Let’s look at a few.

1. Your Website Is Still New

One of the most overlooked factors is time. Search engines like Google don’t immediately rank new websites highly. It can take weeks—usually months!—for your site to start appearing consistently in search results. So, if your website is relatively new, low traffic doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.

It may simply need time, along with a few signals that help search engines understand what your site is about. This is where therapists start to get frustrated when I respond with statements like “Trust the process!” It can be hard to wait :) But there’s definitely a significant portion of the answer to this question that simply involves time!

2. You’re Not Targeting What or How People are Searching

On a basic level, when we talk about SEO we’re talking about a matching game. People are searching for the answer to a question and search engines try to show the best answers to that question. You really want to spend some time figuring out what people questions people are asking and how you can be the best answer to that question.

There are two things you need to know about this. People generally search for more specific rather than less specific answers, and they often search for answers that are geographically relevant.

Being specific is going to be a great tactic when creating content for your website. Many therapy websites use broad or general language like “Counselling services” or “Therapy for individuals”. But, while these are technically accurate, these phrases are highly competitive (i.e. there are lots of sites that use this language so there isn’t anything to make you stand out). And, it’s not always reflective of how people actually search. Instead, potential clients tend to search for more specific terms.

And, especially for services like counselling, potential clients will tend to try to search for counsellors who are geographically relevant.

So instead of searching for something like “individual counselling” they’re more likely to search for “anxiety therapy near me” or “couples counselling in Sarnia, ON”

If your website isn’t aligned with how people search, it becomes much harder to show up in results. That’s one of the areas we can really help guide you.

3. There Isn’t Enough Content

Search engines rely on content to understand and rank your website. If your site only has a few pages (Home, About, Contact), there may not be enough information for it to appear in a wide range of searches. Adding thoughtful, relevant content—like blog posts or expanded service pages—gives your website more opportunities to be found.

You might want to check our What to Include on Your Therapy Website blog post from earlier this month.

This doesn’t mean publishing constantly. Even a small number of well-written, focused posts can make a difference over time.

4. Your Pages Aren’t Optimized for SEO

SEO doesn’t have to be complicated, but a few basics matter:

  • Clear page titles and headings

  • Descriptions that reflect what each page is about

  • Consistent use of relevant keywords

  • Proper page structure

If these elements aren’t in place, search engines may struggle to understand when your site should appear in results. Some of these things can feel really technical, but, again, that’s where Big Heart Marketing can help. We can conduct a review of your website and show you (or fix) the technical areas on your site that need some improvement.

5. Your Website Isn’t Being Updated Over Time

Websites that stay static for long periods can struggle to gain traction.

Regular updates—whether that’s adding content, refining pages, or making small improvements—signal that your site is active and relevant. This doesn’t have to be frequent or overwhelming. Consistency matters more than volume.

What You Can Do to Start Improving Traffic

If your website isn’t getting much traffic, a few focused steps can make a meaningful difference:

  • Use more specific, client-focused language

  • Add a small number of relevant blog posts

  • Make sure your pages clearly reflect what you offer

  • Include your location and areas you serve

  • Keep your site updated over time

These changes don’t need to happen all at once. Even small improvements can build momentum. And, of course we can do a lot to help too - learn about our services here.

Some Final Thoughts

Low traffic doesn’t mean your website isn’t good—it usually just means it hasn’t been fully optimized yet. Search Engine Optimization can seem like dark arts sometimes, but when you understand a few key ingredients and allow those ingredients to marinate over time, you’ll start seeing additional traffic and more clients signing up for your sessions.
